Orloj Abstracted c. 2016
Clock, purpleheart, brass, nickel silver
10″ x 10″ x 2″
This mixed media clock was created as part of Karina Stanton’s Cultural Objects Collection. These objects reference diverse muses around the world. Through abstraction, the nationalities, architecture, language and history become cultural icons promoting the beauty of our shared world.
This design is taken from the Orloj, an astronomical clock in Prague, Czech Republic. This complex and grand edifice resides over the town square and features two intricate dials which not only tell time, but also the seasons, phases of the moon, zodiac and other extraordinary details. Orloj Abstracted takes the lines and shapes from these dials and simplifies them, cutting them apart and rearranging into a new modern functional object.
The base of the clock is hand shaped out of purpleheart, an exotic hardwood known for it’s naturally brilliant vibrant color. The wood is not stained, but oiled to reveal the beautiful violet tones.
The details in 24g brass and nickel silver have been pierced from flat metal sheet and polished by hand using traditional metalsmithing techniques.
Clock is easy to wind and takes one AA battery. It may be displayed on a table top or hung on a wall.
